Fatuma Iseje (Cama Samfya Resource Center) and Bjoern Hassler (Aptivate) developed this project to test the internet capabilities of a number of low-end mobile phones.

The concrete trial was during a Camfed 10,000 women program, in order to train women school leavers on how to use mobile internet on cell phones. The cell phones chosen were the cheapest models capable of running Opera Mini, GMail and Skype. The phone training is part of a Camfed entrepreneuship program, in which mobile internet provides students and trainers with the opportunity to exchange emails and use skype chat to collaborate on their entrepreneurial activities. In total, we used 65 phones, distributed across 15 enterprise groups and their local trainers. This kind of technology helps people who do not have access to computers, the internet, or even power where they live. Mobile internet enables them to communicate and retrieve information, creating opportunities for better livelihoods. The Samfya Resource Center is located in a rural district in the North-East of Zambia, and continues to support students in the use of ICT.
