The netbooks arrived in Lusaka today (Bjoern 20:33, 1 December 2009 (UTC)).
We've got
- 6 EEEPC 1005HA-m (ASUS 1005HA Seashell Atom N270 1.6GHz 1GB 160GB 10" XP Home), wifi 802.11b/g/n (draft) (quoted battery life ~ 8h)
- 4 Lenovo S10-2 (Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 2957 - Atom N280 1.66 GHz 1GB 160GB 10.1" TFT), wifi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR (quoted battery life ~ 6 hours)
which we're evaluating (both were around £225 inc VAT). Both have a 160GB harddrive, screen res 1024x600, both pre-installed with XP Home.
We didn't get an Acer Aspire netbooks (e.g. Acer Aspire One D250 Atom N270 1GB 160GB 10.1"): They are already used by our iSchools partner project (using linux), and we wanted to evaluate a number of other models. The version comparable in price seems to have a 3 cell battery only, with quoted battery life of ~ 3hours, though a 6 cell version is also available.
Extras:
- soft neoprene covers
- bluetooth dongles (for the 1005HAs)
[edit] 1 First impressions
- trackpad
- S10 has smaller trackpad 1005
- S10 has 'scroll bar' while 1005 does 2 finger scrolling
- Lenovo has bluetooth but no SD slot
- S10 has SD slot but no bluetooth
- power cord (to power supply unit): S10 has IBM-style 'clover'-shaped power chord, while 1005 has standard figure 8 (telefunken) lead
- 1005 has flat bottom surface, while S10 batter sticks out.
Windows update required was about 68MB, so not a lot, even over an ok-ish connection in rainy-season Lusaka.
[edit] 2 Software to be installed
The netbooks currently run XP. (They weren't available with Linux...) If we have time, we'll try out Ubuntu Netbook Remix as well. (See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks )
- typing tutor
- GeoGebra
- open office (particularly to use spread sheets with the teachers)
- opera browser (because of low bandwidth features)
- firefox browser
- Miro / vlc
- avira virus protection
The netbooks already had java and flash.
[edit] 3 Resource to be made available
